The Saint Louis Chess Club and the Chess Merit Badge

Since its introduction in 2011, the Chess Merit Badge has become one of the most popular badges in the Scouting America catalog, with over 300,000 scouts earning it. The Saint Louis Chess Club workshops offer a dynamic program that fosters critical thinking, advanced planning, and good sportsmanship.

Workshop Information

  • Cost: Free
  • Formats Available: Virtual and in-person workshops
  • Eligibility: Scouts ages 11–17
  • Location: Saint Louis Chess Club
  • Requirements:
    • Basic knowledge of chess rules

Workshop Topics

  • Week 1: Names of the pieces, piece movements, board setup, basic rules (capturing, check), castling rules
  • Week 2: Phases of the game, opening principles, elements of strategy, early checkmates, draw rules
  • Week 3: Chess tactics and strategy
  • Week 4: Checkmate problems, endgame checkmates, chess history, sportsmanship
  • Week 5: Final test and tournament
  • Class will meet each Monday from 5:30-7:30pm Central Time starting Monday, March 10 and ending Monday, April 7. Students are permitted to attend a Tuesday session as needed. Please notify us of any scheduling changes at [email protected].
